Both had come from unhappy situations, but in the refuge they were now free from pain, and uncertainty.
Border Collie Simon was recovering from his time with a violent owner, when he saw Sammie on the stretcher, and reached out a paw.
Sammie was only 4 months old. And they had been hard months. He had been hit, dragged by a car, and spray painted blue, before miraculously ending up at the refuge.
But on that day, despite the physical pain, the mental anguish was softened by the touch of another dog.
"The compassion and understanding between animals is beyond me" said Jackie O'Sullivan, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC.
Maybe they sensed each other's pain, or felt like kindred spirits, but their bond helped them both to recover from their ordeals, and treatments.
Sammie may have lost the paw where he was shot by a .22 calibre bullet, but he won the love and affection of a new partner for life.
Simon and Sammie are never far away from each other in the clinic.
Simon will probably soon be adopted, but Sammie still has much recovering to do before he can follow his new path in life.
