Emojis originated in Japan in the late 1990's and have since become a world epidemic. A recent study by the University of Michigan y and the the University of Beijing analysed 427 millon WhatsApp and Text messages from over 4 million users in 212 countries to see which cultural and idiomatic differences, if any existed.

The results are surprising...

And the most popular emoji in the World is "Face With Tears of Joy", however various different number 1 emojis exist in other countries.

In the UK the most popular emoji is "Winking Face", whereas other English speaking countries have other less obvious popular choices.

Canadians seem to like "Pile of Poo", Americans "Hundred Points", and Australians, a very reasonable  "Smiling Face With Smiling Eyes".

The Germans, however, have gone for the rather telling "See-No-Evil Monkey", and the French seem to think that they are Casanovas and (over)use "Heart With Arrow".

It is clear though that emojis whilst being understandable in all languages seem to convey different meanings to different peoples, only time will tell if this diversity continues to exist, or whether global homogeneity will reduce our textual preferences!
