Recently on the American version of Antiques Roadshow, this army veteran turned up with his old Rolex. When he was returning home after being stationed in West Germany in the 1960's his superior officer suggested he buy a quality Rolex watch to bring home.
He took the advice and bought a watch for $120, more than a whole month's salary at the time.
He brought the watch along to the Antiques Roadshow to be assessed. With the watch were the original box, strap, receipt, and certificate of purchase with all the watch specifications. This made it possible to verify 100% that it was a first of the series 1960's Rolex GMT-Master.
When it came time for evaluation, the expert said that the watch was worth $35,000, BUT... with all the original packing, and papers, and certificate of purchase, the whole collection was worth $75,000!
Not a bad investment for this lucky man.
