Some people are lucky enough to live near wooded areas, and see wild animals everyday. This reddit user is one of those lucky people, but this day he saw something frightful!
It was a rabbit whose whole head was covered in tumours!
The rabbit was suffering from Shope Papilloma Virus (SPV). Infected animals develop keratinous carcinomas resembling horns, typically on or near the animal’s head. In 66-84% of cases the carcinomas can metastasize or become large enough to interfere with the host’s ability to eat, causing starvation. Even domestic rabbits are not immune.
The only treatment is surgery, without which starvation is likely. The disease can be transmitted by mosquitoes and ticks, avoidance is best by keeping rabbits in closed off areas.
